Help G.R.I.N. Send More Coats to Spain!

Help G.R.I.N. Send More Coats to Spain!G.R.I.N. sent hundreds of coats to shelters in Spain this past winter to help keep the dogs warm!  Many thanks to our supporters who donated used coats as well as those talented ladies who have been making coats.

Of course, it is not cheap to ship the coats to Spain.  A box of twenty-five coats costs about $100 including supplies.  G.R.I.N. uses "Space Bags" to be able to fit as many coats as possible in a box.   Please make a donation to help us cover these costs so we can send more!

HOW YOU CAN HELP:

1)  Make a cash donation to help with the expenses

2)  Send new or used coats to G.R.I.N. (email kim@galgorescue.com for the address)

3)  Donate men's ties - one of our creative coat makers uses men's ties as ties for the coats - what an ingenious idea!  If you have any ties to donate, please send them directly to Nancy Nelson at 6 Meriden Place, Melville, NY  11747.

Take a look at some of the pictures from the shelters that received coats.  What a great feeling  to help these dogs stay warm!

Please help us help the shelters to be prepared for next winter!

Heros Meet and Greet, Colorado?

Heros Meet and Greet in Colorado?Sunday, April 25, was a blustery day in the foothills near Denver, Colorado, but five dogs and their people braved the weather to participate in a meet and greet sponsored by Hero's Pets in Littleton, CO.  G.R.I.N. had been invited by the boutique dog and cat store to showcase galgos and podencos.  Abby (Mayme), Paquito and Cervantes (Jen and Eric), Sancho (Kelly) and Prisa (Judy) provided passerbys with an opportunity to meet these wonderful hounds and educate people about the plight of the sighthounds in Spain.  Thanks also to Hero's Pets for inviting G.R.I.N.

Help for Sofie

Sofie after
emergency surgeryA whirlwind of help has gone out for one unfortunate galga who we named Sofie.  Sofie, another one of the thousands of abandoned galgos in Spain had been wandering the town of Badajoz in Spain.  A kind rescuer named Isabel, who rescued  one Podenco named Paquito that GRIN brought to the U.S. last year, had been able to feed Sofie since February 10th.  Each day Sofie came a little closer to eat, as she was petrified of people.  Progress was being made.

On April 23rd Sofie appeared at the home at night as she had been doing, but now, things were different.  To the horror of Isabel what she saw was Sofie with her jaw hanging, her mouth mutilated and horrific damage to her tongue and teeth.  No words could describe the agony she was suffering from what we can only surmise as foul play.  Without a proper veterinary hospital for this type of injury, Isabel, desperate to help her, reached our friend Silvia Bordetas Gil in Valencia for help.  Silvia known by her friends to do anything in her power to help a dog in distress jumped into action, staying up all night arranging for transportation from Badajoz to Valencia over 500 km away.

Sofie, stunned by her injury was captured easily and immediately her journey began because of some wonderful volunteers eager to help her get to the vet.  This is a life threatening injury as she could not even drink water and the probably of infection very great.  By Sat. morning at 2:00 a.m. Sofie had made it to the veterinary clinic and her extensive surgery began.  The pictures at the clinic are horrific as the extent of the damage was revealed, but, as I write this I can say that the surgeons repair was dramatic.  She can now open and close her jaw.  The tongue had not been cut out completely, but, she had swallowed it in pain and the vet discovered that she had a portion missing but still had most of it.  The prognosis is hopefully that she will recover but time will tell the length of that. A foster home will be needed as she will need special attention.

Many friends of mine were informed of this case by email as it was happening and the love and concern for Sofie has been overwhelming.  Funds are being collected for Sofie's surgeries and ongoing care.  The need will be great.  Donations can be made through G.R.I.N. for Sofie.  We will update on her recovery.  Thank you to everyone involved in this case, Sofie deserves our help and a wonderful home when she recovers never to be a victim again.

Lolys Fund to Help Adopcion Animal in Sevilla

Help Adopcion Animal in SevillaIt has come to GRIN's attention the work of the association called Adopcion Animal in Sevilla Spain. Headed up by Isabel Pavia Vazquez and her husband and daughter and a few volunteers, their commitment to helping over 300 galgos in their care is amazing.  They are in the process of working on a updated shelter thanks to a contribution they have and hope to be open and move their dogs to this new shelter in the summer of 2010.

Isabel works tirelessly with a vet in the area to keep the dogs healthy at their present shelter and once they are ready with all their vetting, tries to move as many as she can to Europe.  As you can imagine the work load is tremendous, the obstacles are great, but these wonderful rescuers continue to fight for the ones that need them the most, the abandoned and helpless.  We can only thank these amazing people for their work and help as we can.  Supplies will be sent to this organization in April as well as our monthly Loly's Fund Donation for April.  This week Isabel and friends moved many galgos out of an encampment who were extremely neglected.  We hear that Scooby also took in 35 of those dogs as well.  The work goes on. Donations to help this shelter are needed.  If anyone would like to contribute to their ongoing work please visit their website at www.adopcionanimal.com  or donate through our PayPal. Thank You

Food Crisis at Scooby

Dogs Cannot Live By Bread Alone!Dear GRIN Friends, we reach out to you today to ask that you read this plea below from the Scooby Medina Shelter.

GRIN founder Abby Christman and Veterinarian friend Jason Cordeiro will be going to Scooby at the end of April, and it would be awesome to take the shelter a sizable donation from their GRIN friends and supporters in the U.S.  We hope that there will be a way to resolve this huge problem in the near future, but for now, the dogs need to eat.  You can donate through GRIN at the website, www.galgorescue.org, or through PayPal; alternatively, you can donate directly through the Scooby website at www.scoobymedina.org.  Thank you, and we will keep you informed about the situation when the GRIN volunteers return.

FOOD CRISIS AT SCOOBY PLEASE HELP!

Dear Friends,

We are reaching out to you at a very critical time at our shelter.  The dogs desperately need our help at this time.  We are very close to disastrous food crisis for the dogs.

The dogs at Scooby are fed a diet of raw chicken, ground up and mixed with bread and also dry dog food on days when we dont have chicken.  We get the chicken for free but there is now a new law that is being passed in Spain that all chicken carcasses must be destroyed and cannot be used by anyone.  This is a huge waste and also a very big problem for Scooby, because this was our source of free food at the shelter since the beginning.

As you can imagine, feeding over 300 dogs on a daily basis is a lot food.  There is no possible way that we can afford to purchase dog food for this many animals.

At this time, we are asking for you help of donations to buy food so we can feed the dogs that are currently at the shelter.  Of course donations of dog food are accepted as well.

Sadly, the reality is, if we cannot feed the animals, we cant operate, and if we cant operate, we cannot continue to do the work that we have been doing.  Even worse, we will have euthanize dogs that have simply no chance for adoption as we wont be able to afford to maintain such large numbers at the shelter.

Your support, no matter how big or small can literally save a life in this situation.  We are looking into several options to this situation to see if we purchase the carcasses for a discounted price and other alternatives.  But as you know, these things take time and this moment, we dont have the time.

The dogs need to eat. We need you. Please help us during this difficult time.

Thank you.

Please support our work DONATE TODAY!

Quia, One of the Jaen Galgos Goes to Forever Home in Holland

Quia goes to HollandStory by Vera Thorenaar Reddering, foster mom.

Quia left on Sunday, 14 March from Seville by plane along with two other Galgos and a cat.  A wonderful man from GRH Greyhound Rescue Holland, took them all with him, traveling on his own with the cat in cabin.  The cat came from Jaen ABYDA (Quia), and he stayed at my home in Malaga for 1 day and night, and we took him together with Quia to Seville (2 1/2 hours away).  The cat had been adopted by a Dutch family, but they had no way of getting him to Holland, so I asked Raoul (GRH treasurer) and he accepted.

Quia was scared although she stepped in her crate without problems.  It was heartbreaking because I felt that she thought that I let her down as well, when now she was so confident. That is the toughest side of being a foster family: I suffer and I can cope for me, but I suffer so much for the dog, although I know that she will go to a fantastic family, and shell get over it and be quite happy.

Anyhow, when she arrived in Brussels her forever family was waiting for her.  Quia didnt want to leave the crate, so they took her in her crate to the car and then home.  When she arrived at her new home, the family's whippet was not very happy to see her, and so they growled a little bit at each other when they met.  I said to the lady that they would settle, and that Quia must have felt lost and afraid: she is the sweetest Galgo I have ever seen my little princess.

Next day, I received new stories from the family saying that they were doing fine, and today they have been running and sleeping together.  Quia and her family are very, very happy.  So again another great job done all together!

Luna... Jaen Galga Traveling to Germany

Luna's new life in GermanyA group in Germany uses this private bus to transport dogs out of Spain on a monthly basis. Many associations in Spain have been able to secure a new life for their dogs via this transport.  Luna has been lucky to get her spot on the bus for her trip to her foster home in Germany. The trip takes 18 hours and the group of ladies share the drive and it can be exhausting, what with 45 dogs on board!

Everyone made it safe and sound and Luna is now in her foster home that has decided to adopt her!

Luna is now home!  From killing station in Jaen to a safe and comfy life in Germany as a loved family member.  GRIN gives thanks to all those involved, including Charlotte del Rio who told us of the Jaen galgos, Silvia Bordetas Gil who cared for two of the dogs and arranged this trip and everyone else involved.  Thank You.

Solvang Greyhound Gathering 2010

6th annual West Coast Greyhound Gathering in Solvang, CAThe sixth annual West Coast Greyhound Gathering in Solvang California, was held Feb 19-21, 2010.  Organizer Terri Rogo and volunteers made it another memorable weekend with about 200 greyhounds and four galgos in attendance.  The town of Solvang once again rolled out the red carpet for this event and it is great to see all the greyhounds and their people enjoying a relaxing weekend of events, with old and new friends.  Even though the weather was not as perfect as the previous five years but it was good for dog walking, so the hounds enjoyed it!

GRIN was invited to show our 2010 update slide show presentation about the plight of the Galgos on Saturday morning, and board member, Telma Shaw, facilitated the presentation.  Wally Lacey another GRIN volunteer helped with her technical abilities to make the presentation run smoothly and volunteer Janet Nethery ran the information table.  There was a very good turn out and the information was well received.  Many people thanked us for bringing the plight of the Galgo to light and even suggested we tell Oprah about it!  People offered to donate medical supplies and volunteer at Scooby shelter in Medina del Campo, because they were touched by the reality of what is happening to the Galgos and Podencos in Spain.  A thank you also goes to Judy Greenfield for the first slide show we viewed and to Abby Christman and Wally Lacey for the 2010 updated presentation.  Also a thank you to all the vendors who donated to our cause and to Dawn of the Creation Station in Buellton for making coats for the galgos during the event as she has done for many years!

GRIN's mission statement includes reaching out to sighthounds worldwide, and thus we paid tribute to the Guam Greyhound Rescue of 2009 by showing Susan Netboy of Greyhound Protection Leauge's The Guam Story.  It was very beautiful and moving. It shows us all that rescue has no borders and that whether Galgo or Greyhound, when they are in trouble, there are angels all around the world helping them in amazing ways.

Back in April of 2009, during the Guam rescue, GRIN was touched by a very special Guam Greyhound named Red Fern Flyer (Fernie/Flyer) who had endured a painful injury in Guam. Fernie's canine tooth was lodged in his nasal cavity, most likely due to trauma, and no one knew it.  This horrible situation was discovered during a routine dental and immediately he got the veterinary care he needed and many GRIN donors and friends contributed to raise funds for this emergency.  Asa Barbani and Telma fostered him during his recovery.  Four months later, with no adoption in sight, Flyer was moved back to Homestretch Greyhounds care and fostered by Jean Smith, for another four months.  Jean brought Flyer to the Solvang gathering where Telma and Flyer reconnected after so many months.  Flyer remembered her and husband Mike and he wagged his tail every time he saw them.  During the event Telma took every opportunity to walk with Flyer and to talk to folks, and tell them his story.  The dream would be to find a home amongst all the Greyhound lovers!  The wonderful turn of events came at the Friday night Pizza Party when Flyer made a bee line to the front of the line of people waiting to enter, he went straight for Dave Gehr.  Telma introduced him to the Gehrs who had adopted their boy Sammy from Homestretch Greyhound and had been thinking of adding another hound to their pack! Imagine that!  They were touched by Flyer's story and the fact that after 10 months in foster care, Flyer was still waiting for his forever, must have tugged on their heart strings!  His luck turned that Friday afternoon, as he nuzzled right up to them, of course that did not help!  That evening, a year after being rescued from a horrible fate in Guam, Flyer began his new life with Polly and David Gehr and Greyhound friend Sammy.  Flyer, now renamed Fernie again, had found his forever home because he had come to Solvang Greyhound Gathering of 2010!!

Thanks to everyone for this amazing time in beautiful Solvang with so many wonderful hounds, Greys, Galgos, Borzois, Salukis, Harriers and mixes, each and every one is so special in their own way, we are the lucky ones to have them in our lives... See you next year in Solvang!
